The method

Why your birthday?

What if the day you were born was never just a coincidence?

For more than 2,000 years, people in China and Greece believed numbers were more than a way to count. They saw them as a way to describe people. The Life Code 生命密码 is built on those ideas. This page shows you where it comes from and every step of how your reading is worked out. Nothing is hidden and nothing is guessed.

Where it comes from

Built on ideas over 2,000 years old

The Life Code brings together three very old ideas. Here they are, with the real history and the proper names, so you can look up any of them yourself.

Ancient China · the Lo Shu 洛书

A grid of nine numbers where every line adds up

Chinese legend says that during the great flood of Emperor Yu, a turtle rose from the Luo River with a pattern of dots on its shell. The pattern was a square of the numbers 1 to 9. Every row, every column and both diagonals add up to exactly 15. Chinese texts were describing it as a number square by around 80 CE, and it is still used in feng shui today.

The Lo Shu square. Try adding any line.

The name of the grid you will see in Step 3, the 九宫格 (nine-palace grid), comes from this square. The Life Code keeps the nine squares and lays the numbers out in its own order.

Greece · around 2,500 years ago

Pythagoras 毕达哥拉斯 and “all is number”

Yes, the same Pythagoras behind a² + b² = c². He and his followers believed numbers were the key to understanding everything, people included. They linked numbers to human qualities like justice and marriage, and they saw each number as having its own character.

The Pythagoreans thought the principles of numbers were the principles of all things.Aristotle, writing about the Pythagoreans in Metaphysics

Modern numerology is named after him. The rule of adding digits until you reach one number from 1 to 9 is called a digital root in maths, and it is the same rule your triangle uses.

China · over 2,000 years ago · the Five Elements 五行

Five forces that feed and check each other

Chinese thinkers described the world through five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each one feeds the next, called 相生 (the feeding cycle), and each one keeps another in check, called 相克 (the checking cycle). The same system is still used in Chinese medicine and feng shui today.

Fire 火3 · 8 Earth 土5 Metal 金1 · 6 Water 水2 · 7 Wood 木4 · 9
→ feeds (相生)- - → keeps in check (相克)

The small numbers show which of your numbers belong to each element in the Life Code school.

This is how we compare two people’s main numbers. If your element feeds theirs, things tend to flow. If yours keeps theirs in check, that is often where the push and pull comes from.

Modern day · the Life Code 生命密码

Three old ideas, one method

The Life Code is the modern method that brings these ideas together, taught by numerology teachers across the Chinese-speaking world. Your birthday becomes a triangle of single digits using the digital root. Those numbers go on the nine-square grid. Then the five elements show how two people meet. It is taught in workshops and books, and it is the method this site follows, step by step.

Being straight with you: this is a tradition, not a lab test, and we will never dress it up as science. What it is: a fixed set of rules with deep roots, applied the same way to every birthday, that you can check yourself with a pen. Read yours and judge for yourself.

The nine numbers

What each number stands for

Each number from 1 to 9 has its own meaning in this tradition. Put them together and they start to explain why you think the way you do, what drives you, what holds you back, and why some people get you without trying while others keep rubbing you the wrong way.

1
Independence and initiative

Self-starting, speaks up and leads from the front.

2
Sensitivity and cooperation

Reads people well, diplomatic and feels things deeply.

3
Creativity and expression

Expressive and imaginative, good with words and ideas.

4
Structure and discipline

Organised, reliable and builds things step by step.

5
Freedom and change

Adaptable and curious, comfortable with change.

6
Care and responsibility

Nurturing and responsible, creates harmony around them.

7
Reflection and depth

Reflective and analytical, drawn to meaning.

8
Drive, money and results

Strong with resources and authority, and gets results.

9
Compassion and vision

Big-hearted and idealistic, sees the wider picture.

Step 1

Your triangle and core code

Your birthday is split into day, month and the two halves of the year. Each part is added up until it is a single digit. Those are added in pairs, then once more to give your number. The two numbers in the middle row plus your number make your core code.

Worked example: 14 / 09 / 1988

4
58
5917

Bottom row: day, month, first half of the year, second half of the year.

  1. Day 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5. Month 09 stays 9.
  2. Year 1988 is split into 19 and 88. 1 + 9 = 10 becomes 1. 8 + 8 = 16 becomes 7.
  3. Second row: day and month, 5 + 9 = 14 becomes 5. Year halves, 1 + 7 = 8.
  4. Your number: 5 + 8 = 13 becomes 4.
  5. Core code: the middle row and your number read together, 584.

Numbers such as 11 and 22 are reduced to a single digit as well, so every number in the triangle is 1 to 9. If one half of the year is 00, as in 2000, we count it as 5. Some teachers use this convention, and we apply the same rule to 1900. A half like 05 in 2005 is simply 5.

Step 2

Your 12 codes

The triangle keeps going. Each pair of neighbouring numbers is added and reduced to make a new number beside them, the same way as before. Every code is three numbers read together: two numbers and the one they make. Your birthday gives 12 codes in a fixed order.

Same example: 14 / 09 / 1988

CodeMade fromWhat the school links it to
5955955 + 9 = 14, then 5Father’s side
1781781 + 7 = 8Mother’s side
5845845 + 8 = 13, then 4Your core
5515515 + 5 = 10, then 1Work and friends (roughly ages 21 to 40)
9559559 + 5 = 14, then 5Work and friends (roughly ages 21 to 40)
1561561 + 5 = 6Work and friends (roughly ages 21 to 40)
8438438 + 4 = 12, then 3Children and team (roughly 41 to 60)
5495495 + 4 = 9Children and team (roughly 41 to 60)
3933933 + 9 = 12, then 3Children and team (roughly 41 to 60)
1891891 + 8 = 9Family and later life (roughly 61 on)
7867867 + 8 = 15, then 6Family and later life (roughly 61 on)
9669669 + 6 = 15, then 6Family and later life (roughly 61 on)

Where the 12 codes sit in the full triangle

The big circles are your seven triangle numbers. The small ones are made from them, two at a time. Each coloured group is one area of life.

Your coreFather’s and mother’s sideWork and friendsChildren and teamFamily and later life

The father, mother and age labels come from the school itself. Teachers differ slightly on the exact age boundaries, so we show them as a guide rather than fixed dates. There are 81 possible codes, and each has its own reading, following the meanings taught in this tradition, written in our own words.

Step 3

Your grid 九宫格

The seven numbers of your triangle are placed on the nine-square grid. A lit square means that number is in your triangle. A number can appear twice or more. An empty square is a quality that comes less naturally. Only the triangle numbers count, not the raw digits of the date.

Same example: triangle numbers 5, 9, 1, 7, 5, 8, 4

36925×28147

The 5 is lit twice. The 2, 3 and 6 are empty.

Step 4

Your lines

The grid has 8 straight lines through it: three across, three down and two corner to corner. When all three numbers on a line are in your chart, that line is complete, and its quality tends to come through strongly. Most people complete one or two. About 1 in 10 complete three or more.

369258147

Same example: 14 / 09 / 1988

This chart completes three lines: the Practical line (1, 4, 7), the Action line (7, 8, 9) and the Ambition line (1, 5, 9). Someone who gets things built, done and moving.

Willpower4 · 5 · 6Will, persistence and follow-through
Action7 · 8 · 9Taking action and getting results
Ambition1 · 5 · 9Drive, goals and achievement
Intuition3 · 5 · 7Insight and inner knowing

Highlighted rows are the lines this example completes.

Step 5

Your missing numbers

A missing number is any number from 1 to 9 that is not among the seven numbers of your triangle. Your triangle holds seven numbers and there are nine, so everyone is missing at least two. Most people are missing three or four. A missing number is not a flaw. It marks a skill that tends to take more conscious effort, and every one comes with a reading on what helps.

2

Worked example · missing 2

Learning to read the room

How it can show up: You may move fast and only later notice someone felt unheard. Patience with slow or sensitive people can run thin.

What helps: Pause and ask one real question before you decide. Notice how people feel, not just what they say. Pairing up with a patient partner helps.

Step 6

Your doubled numbers

When a number shows up twice or more, you get more of that quality. Usually that is a strength. When it tips over, the same quality turns into its shadow side. About 97 in every 100 birthdays have at least one doubled number, so this part of the reading applies to almost everyone.

5×2

Worked example · double 5

Freedom and change, turned up

The strength: adaptable and curious, comfortable with change, quick to try something new.

When it tips over: restlessness. Getting bored once something becomes routine, and moving on before it is finished.

Step 7

What is different about your chart

Two people with the same number can have very different charts. One number 4 might have a double 5 and three complete lines. Another might be missing five numbers. So your reading never stops at your number. Each line in that section names the digit it comes from, so you can check it against your own triangle.

Two people

How two people are compared

This is the heart of MatchMyNumber. For a pair, both grids are laid over each other and read together. Five things are checked, every time, in the same order:

  1. Where you click: numbers you both have. No translation needed there.
  2. What each of you brings: numbers one of you has and the other does not. That is what you give each other.
  3. Your shared blind spot: numbers neither of you has. Nobody naturally covers it.
  4. Where you will clash: a number one of you has twice that the other lacks completely. That gap is where friction tends to show.
  5. What only works together: a line neither of you completes alone, but you complete as a pair.

Then your two main numbers are compared through the five elements. Does one of you feed the other, or keep the other in check? Your 12 codes are also laid side by side, and any code you both carry is pointed out.

Where they click
Both have 1, 3, 5 and 8. Independence, expression, freedom and drive come easily to both of them.
What Aisha brings Wei
6 (care and responsibility) and 7 (reflection and depth). Neither shows in Wei’s chart.
What Wei brings Aisha
2 (sensitivity and cooperation) and 9 (compassion and vision). Neither shows in Aisha’s chart.
Their shared blind spot
Neither has a 4 (structure and discipline). Routine, paperwork and follow-through are nobody’s natural job here.
Where they will clash
Aisha has a double 6 and Wei has none. She may end up looking after everything and everyone. To Wei, that can feel like being managed.
What only works together
Neither completes the Mind line (3, 6, 9) or the Action line (7, 8, 9) alone. Together they complete both.
Elements
Aisha’s 3 is Fire and Wei’s 5 is Earth. Fire feeds Earth 火生土, so Aisha tends to be the one who energises Wei.
Shared code
Both carry the code 189 in their 12 codes.

Every line above comes straight from the two birthdays. Put the same two dates in and you will get the same result.

The real test

Don’t take our word for it. Test it on three people.

History is nice, but the only proof that counts is whether it sounds like you and the people you know. So run this test.

1

Yourself

Read yours first. Does the start of it sound like you, including the parts you would rather not admit?

2

Someone you know inside out

A partner, a sibling, your best friend. You already know them, so you will spot straight away if it is off.

3

Someone who drives you mad

The boss, the in-law, the housemate. Check whether “where you will clash” names the thing you actually argue about.

When all three land, you will see why people keep coming back to it.

Fair questions

For the sceptics

Isn’t this just a horoscope?

A star sign puts you in one of 12 boxes based on your birth month. This uses your full date of birth to make 7 numbers, 12 codes and a grid. That is why two people with the same number, or the same star sign, can get very different readings. It is still a tradition, not a science, and we say so.

Why does it feel so accurate?

Because it is built from your exact numbers. A star sign gives the same description to one in twelve people. Your chart changes when the date moves by a single day. Psychologists know general descriptions can feel personal, called the Barnum effect, which is exactly why every line in your reading names the number it comes from. The fair test: read yours, then someone very different, and compare.

Does my time of birth matter?

No. The Life Code uses the date only, so everyone born on the same day gets the same chart. Use your date of birth as it appears on your ID or passport.

What about twins, or people with the same birthday?

They get the same chart. The chart describes the tendencies you start with. How you grow up, the people around you and the choices you make shape the rest, which is why two people with the same chart can still turn out differently.

Is this religious?

No. It does not ask you to believe anything or follow anything. It is a way of describing people, drawn from Chinese and Greek ideas about numbers.

Can it tell me who to marry, or whether to take a job?

No, and please don’t use it that way. It can show you patterns worth talking about. Big decisions should rest on what you actually see in the people and the situation in front of you.

Where do the readings come from?

The meaning of each number, code and line follows what is taught in the Life Code tradition. We wrote every reading in our own words, in plain English, and the way two charts are compared is our own.

What this is, and what it is not

It is not about predicting your future or deciding your destiny. It is about noticing the patterns you may have carried with you from the very beginning.

It is

  • A consistent, repeatable method
  • Built on ideas taught for centuries
  • A way to describe tendencies and talk about them
  • Open about every step it takes

It is not

  • A scientific test or a prediction of events
  • Medical, legal or financial advice
  • A reason to make a major decision on its own
